Our tipps for you

Winter hiking in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena

  • Tip 1: Plan the best hiking time

Winter days are short and the sun usually only shines for a few hours. The early afternoon is therefore particularly suitable for a winter hike. Enquire about when the sun shines on the path of your choice.
  • Tip 2: Important: sun protection

Don’t underestimate the power of the winter sun. Moreover, the snow reflects UV rays. Apply sunscreen to your face, ears and hands, and wear sunglasses. Children’s skin is particularly sensitive!
  • Tip 3: Keep yourself warm

The body loses lots of warmth via the head, and is particularly the case for babies and toddlers. Protect head and hands with caps and gloves as cold wind and shady spots make temperatures drop rapidly.
  • Tip 4: Wear the right hiking boots

Padded boots reaching over the ankles are ideal for winter hiking. While the winter hiking trails in Berwang are cleared, some snow can always fall into low-cut shoes. The result: cold, wet feet and not much hiking fun.
  • Tip 5: Plan hiking breaks

Even though hikes in winter might not last as long as in summer, you should still plan breaks. The body loses more energy in the cold and fatigues faster. Bring a foldable thermo-material cushion and, if there’s no rest stop option, a thermos flask filled with hot tea.
  • Tip 6: Wear multiple layers of clothing

Useful in summer, tried and tested for winter hikes: you can put on or take off one or several layers depending on temperature, sun, shade and time of day.
